UTAU tutorial - CV Oto's by SpiralSilhouettes UTAU tutorial - CV Oto's by SpiralSilhouettes
Sorry this is coming in a day late, I argued with Hypercam for about two hours after my recording kept getting off time, and that turned me off making the tutorial yesterday. I'm going to make them picture tutorials instead since hypercam hates me ;-;

Anyway, here is my CV oto tutorial, I hope you find it useful! If you have any questions, let me know. My next tutorial will be about pitchbends!

I tried to use this tutorial, but my utau turned out choppy and only a few notes actually played (I use resampler.exe, just so you know). Any suggestions?

Hmm, that's strange. Admittedly it's been a little while since I've used UTAU, but might I ask which version you're using? Mac/PC?

As for only a few notes playing, from what I remember that may be an issue with your FRQ files. Perhaps re-rendering them might help? If you've followed the instructions in this tutorial, I don't see why they wouldn't play fine :o So part of me thinks it might not be the oto. Send me a screenshot of what your oto file looks like in UTAU, and I'll see if I spot anything odd :o

It may be my FRQs, since I have no idea how to configure those.

Sorry, but I can't figure out how to upload pictures (I'm not a core member)

ahhh ok ;A; sorry about that. If you right click on a file in the oto (i think, again its been a while) you should be able to click render frq or something.

Um, I'm sure someone's asked already, but what about "ん"? Sorry if I sound stupid ;_; I've nevered oto'd anything but VCV (NEVER AGAIN)

ん is a little tricky, I've seen different people do it different ways.
Personally, I do it like I show you how to oto vowels in this tutorial. That makes the 'n' smooth when transitioning into other sounds. Some people will do it like a soft consonant though!!

Amazing tutorial!! Really helped with my oto I've been trying to do for quite some time now. I have a small question though..... You said when doing "kya" to not count the "y" as a consonant but instead as a vowel. So my question is, do I do this with every sample with a "y" in it, and if so does this also count towards other samples like "chi" where I would consider the "h" a vowel?

Yes!! Treat them as soft consonants, essentially.

For the hard consonants, does the "ch" and "ts" sounds count as well?

I personally consider them soft in my recordings, but honestly it can depend on the person. Some people are VERY good at recording those sounds in short bursts, but if it's around the length of a sound like your 's' sounds or 'sh' sounds, i'd consider it a soft one.

I feel like this is a really dumb question but I'm going to ask anyways since I'm stupid ;A;
So um, when I oto my voicebank, do these changes stay with the voicebank? Like if I were to oto it, then share my VB for others to download, would they have to oto it manually themselves?
I have a similar question about the alias. If I had the files as romaji and put hiragana as the alias, would other users who download my VB have to add the alias themselves again?
Sorry if my questions don't make sense, I want to learn how to use UTAU and create a voicebank as well but I don't really know these things D: I've watched tutorials but these questions were still in mind.

As long as you do not click the 'x' button, but close out of the oto programmer with the 'okay' button, it should save both the oto and the alias :) other people will not have to oto it over again, that would be so much work! But it's not a dumb question, not at all. I hope I helped!

Thanks so much! I was wondering that for the longest time but never got a direct answer XD
Also, I have another question if I may. ^^; I noticed in recording tutorials that each phoneme/sound should be saved as it's own separate .wav file like, "cha.wav", "che.wav", "chi.wav" but when looking at some voicebanks, these multiple sounds are saved in just one .wav like, "cha_che_chi.wav" How exactly does that work? I noticed that these voicebanks have less files in a sense because of that. I haven't seen any explanations for this so maybe you can explain this to me? ;A; Sorry for asking so many questions //hides

Oh, that's a good question! There are two answers, really:
1) That bank could possibly be VCV, CVVC etc. meaning it uses a different recording style than standard CV voicebanks, so there might be a different string of sounds recorded. (EX: a common vcv sample looks like this 'chachachichachuchecha.wav')
2) They are using aliases to separate the sounds. There is a way in UTAU to oto the same sound multiple times, but with different aliases for each way you oto it. So, a person could theoretically have the sounds cha, che, chi, cho, and chu all on the same file, but create separate aliases and otos for them. This can be done by opening the voicebank settings (where you oto your files) right clicking on any file, and clicking the 'duplicate' option. Then your sample will have 2 oto files for one sample, that can be oto'd and aliase'd separately from each other, while still using the same wavefile as the base.

I hope that helps!! If you have any other questions to ask, feel free! It's no bother at all :)

I have only seen tutorials for CV, so I guess that explains why I wasn't familiar with that file format ^^;
Aaah, okay thanks so much for the detailed answers. :D I've been looking for explanations everywhere but I'm assuming this is just "common sense" by Utau users. Speaking of which, I want to become a better user myself but I've noticed that almost every one I've seen makes their own USTs. Should I learn to make my own as well? I feel rude just using other people's but I don't have too much background knowledge in the skills needed for that.

I appreciate you being so nice about all of my questions!~ Tuzki Emoticon 3

It's no problem! I'm happy to help! I actually haven't been able to make videos much lately, so answering questions feels pretty good, it gives me a way to still be involved in the community :D

You'll learn as you go, don't worry. What seems really new to you now will be second nature in a few months, and I say that from personal experience. As for making UST's, you shouldn't feel rude! People who release UST's do it so they can be used. If you want to do more than just plug-and-play a UST, you might want to consider tuning UST's other people make as a start. It's a great way to spice up a cover if you do your own pitchbends, and there are plenty of tutorials for that on Youtube. I'll link you some good ones here:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIx1LK…
www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxRmDV…

If you actually want to make your own UST's, there are a lot of ways!! If you want me to find some tutorials on it for you, I'll see what I can find :)

That's quite a relief to me, whew haha. I know but it just makes me feel like I should put more effort I guess? I can't really explain but I'll try tuning like you suggested! :) Thanks for sending me those links, I'll check them out :meow:

Are there really? I would really appreciate that if it's okay with you c:

Thanks for the lovely tutorial!

Though one question, I don't know whether I didn't notice or not but, does the pink bar has no function in a way?

The pink bar does have a function actually, but you'll only notice it on long notes. the area covered by the pink bar will not be 'stretched' on long notes. It's a way to keep your consonants from sound like a 'b' sound to a 'bbbbbb' sound when a long note is played. :)

yes, usually just put it past the consonant, sliiiightly into the vowel. no more than 10% into the vowel, i'd say.

I have encountered another problem: whenever I copy'n'paste the hiragana symbol into the 'alias' box, it becomes a question mark. Why is it doing that?

:iconspiralsilhouettes:

That's because your computer isn't in JP locale (where hiragana is actually typable). It's a computer setting, and I'm not sure if all computers have it?? But there are some tutorials for UTAU/Vocaloid users on youtube for people who need to learn how to activate it.

I am set in the Japanese locale. I'm sidestepping the issue for now by using the Essential Utau Toolkit which lets me convert any hiragana usts into romajji.

Is the problem just with you pasting characters into the program, or any ust already in hiragana?

The problem is me pasting characters into the program. The hiragana for any ust shows up as hiragana. I just can't paste any hiragana aliases into my voicebank. BTW, thank you for your time.

Not a problem, i think i know what it is!! Sometimes the fonts on certain websites etc doesnt transfer properly when pasting into a program like UTAU. you should try finding a different website to get the characters from, it actually used to happen to me quite a bit, haha!
